Oh, the talent!

I used to drink a lot, but I rarely drank alone!

In my much-younger days I was quite an enthusiastic social drinker. Over the years my social involvement has ebbed and flowed, but even now I am happy to enjoy a gin and tonic with friends. During most of my travels I was typically joined by a colleague or two, but these past 10 years as a road rep I usually traveled solo. Having been around an alcoholic or two in my life I had an acute awareness of what drinking alone could do to a person, so I promised myself early in the rep stage that I would never drink alone. I can report honestly that, except on two occasions, I have kept that promise!

Starting My Default Life necessitated my need to reach a broad audience, so I’ve been exploring all the typical platforms. I grew up in the 90’s and have only recently jumped onto the social media bandwagon. I generally believe that real life is better than anything you can get from these mini-computers called “smartphones.” While finding friends and exploring what each platform had to offer, I began to see some incredibly amusing and extremely talented people. From robot-dancers to poets reciting their original work to couples putting on skits, there are worlds of various genres to pick from and endless entertainment to be consumed! It’s a truly terrifying thought that one could spend all day being amused, laughing out loud, and maybe even learning new skills on any of these apps.

There are several things in life that I’m a huge proponent of…growing as a person and sharing with others what I’ve learned (just to name two of them). It seems to me, just like these blogs that I’m posting, there are many, many content creators on these platforms who want to share their talents and either grow themselves or help others grow—hopefully both! As for these blogs…I hope it’s growth for all of us! So, I propose for all of us to become Social Watchers! Much like we should rarely drink alone…we should also rarely watch alone! Pick someone’s phone and one of their feeds, set a timer for 20 minutes, and together you can be amused, learn something new, and share an experience you can talk about later! Then put that phone down and go live your Default Life!
