Maybe I’m lucky. I have lived a great life full of adventures, some fun and others not so fun. I was eager to leave home and my hometown to start life. After meeting and marrying my wonderful wife we had a great family which brought it’s own fun, sickness, animals, building projects and more. I also really enjoy reading a variety of books from authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien to Jocko Wilink. Between travel, life, and reading I rarely run out of topics to discuss or ways to connect with other people.
I became acutely aware of this when my eldest daughter was discerning her vocation of becoming a nun. Instead of visiting universities we were visiting abbeys and monasteries. Discussing some of these trips with colleagues made me realize topics that may be standard fare at our house were foreign (even unheard of) for others! Happily, all were curious and happy to chat about it!
The big point here is this - GO OUT AND DO THINGS THAT ARE FUN AND INTERESTING! From the recent books you’ve read to trips you have taken to teaching an old dog (like me) new tricks such as blogging and posting on social media! (Hey, that last one is not as easy for some as it is for others.) Why not take a couple Fridays off for a long travel weekend, read or listen to a few new books, and try an activity you have been too nervous or busy to attempt! Challenges help us grow, develop life experience, and enable the ability to connect with others. The amount of knowledge in this world is awe-inspiring and you can truly stand on the shoulders of giants.
To the recipients of someone who has learned something new and exciting to share…be receptive and interactive with them! And by all means…share what new thing you have interest in. Imagine how great dialog could be between friends, colleagues, and spouses if everyone was attempting new achievements and learning every day! The best experiences I have enjoyed is when I just began a learning journey only to find someone I know who is already a subject matter expert - talk about serendipitous! Maybe you could use My Default Life’s website to start a Guest Blog under that Pen Name you have wanted to introduce to the world! Maybe you want to start hiking and need a great travel-friendly default.water Nalgene to nudge your progress!
Quick Tip - There is a free app called Libby that can be attached to your free local library card that has free book and audio book titles! A world of knowledge is at your fingertips!
Remember, as Jimmy Buffet (RIP) tells us, “Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been!” Find your next adventure, laugh more, cry when necessary- and be interesting!
