𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲!

𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺!

I love asking questions and engaging in conversation! When I learned that Ohio Means Jobs was hosting a Career Expo at the University of Akron - Wayne Campus, I was thrilled for the opportunity to speak with our local companies and glean some knowledge and insight to, of course, share with others!

A quick and simple question: “What can I share with those looking for work to help them with their job search?”

  • For those looking for work in ‘at home care’: Make certain you have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation. Also have as few points off your license as possible. Each company will have policies for this, but having a safe driving history is very important.

  • “Give me your full experience! Don’t just say you were a manager - define what, who and how you managed.” For instance: I managed the afternoon shift of 3 people in a coffeeshop or I was a Weld QC Tester for high-pressure aluminum and stainless steel boiler systems. The value is in the details.

  • “Fill everything out!” Employers know this is a difficult time to be out of work…even if they don’t outwardly show it. Please fill out every field and don’t write “see resume”.Many of these applications are still human-sorted and this makes it very difficult for them to move you to the next phase.

  • “Study and Prepare!” Don’t walk into a job interview asking what they do. Do some research on their website, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, etc. and have a good idea of what the job will entail.

  • “Ohio is a Second Chance and Skills-Based State!” Many jobs for the state of Ohio are second-chance opportunities where previous offenses may not hinder your application. Ohio is also a Skills-Based employer and look at your total work history and not just your ‘degrees’, so if you have the skills and experience but not the exact degree…apply.

  • “Always have a question during the interview!” Make certain it’s relevant and thoughtful, but in an interview when they ask “Do you have any questions for us?”, have a couple ready.

  • “Be Authentic!” This may be obvious but very worth noting - alway be authentic! There is an old adage in sales - “people buy from people.” In an interview be authentic and be you. Remember, you are also interviewing the company as much as they are interview you. 😄

  • “Tell me why you are looking for a new opportunity.” Please don’t say “I didn’t like my manager,” but rather say that you are looking for more (or less) responsibility or wanting to make a larger (or smaller) team, etc. Dig a little deeper to find your ‘why’.

I truly hope these little insights help you on your career journey and if you need help finding your ‘why’, updating your resume, or searching for that specific role - please contact me for more details about our Strengths-Resume system!

Have a great week!
