"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" old Chinese proverb

Two years ago (in October) a friend who was in-between jobs had decided to offer a boy’s faith adventure club for a couple of months. Due to the time of day and other commitments, our boys were only able to attend two meetings. The second meeting they attended introduced a lesson in light martial arts and self defense. Upon my arrival home from work the boys were raving about this cool self defense they learned and something called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I was aware of Kung-Fu, being an avid long-time fan of David Carradine, (and maybe needless to say but my wife and I ate exclusively with chop-sticks during our Kill Bill phase!). I knew a couple of martial artists but had almost zero experience myself. We inquired who gave the demonstration and were directed to seek out Impact Martial Arts in Canal Fulton, OH. After a quick and painless 13 minute drive from our house, our then 16 year old lead us down a path that has changed our household forever - and for the better! There were some introductions with Master Baroni and upon hearing we had a large family he smiled and said, “We’ll have to get all your kids in here!” I will tell you per my experience, this world doesn’t always celebrate children and a larger family is usually intimidating to most people…but not here!

To date we have 4 boys and myself in BJJ, 2 in Shotokan Karate, and 3 of us (including now my wife) in Krav Maga! Our journey from zero-knowledge of the marital arts to comparing bruises and demonstrating kicking techniques in our living room unfolded from a single point of origin - a man who was in-between jobs and wanted to share knowledge with his children and with others! We all have talents and interests that when shared might cause a huge impact that changes the trajectory of other’s futures forever! Don’t hesitate to share, don’t hesitate to laugh or smile (both are contagious), and always be kind because our sharing of knowledge and words of kindness may save someone’s life and/or family! - Thank you, Jim!
