To sleep is your reward! pt. 1

Always do your absolute best…then rest! - Jay

During an interview with Lex Fridman, Bret Weinstein was asked to offer advice to high school and college aged students. What Bret recommended may seem unconventional but in retrospect is spot on: find two things you like - even if unrelated - and become the best version of that fusion of tools that you can be. The particular niche you create will be needed somewhere and your unique combination of skills will be valued. For instance, you might be a brilliant psychologist and the life of the party (Amos Tversky). Maybe you are a bodybuilder with a great business acumen andcan act (Arnold Swartzennegger). Perhaps you are a pretty darn good design and workflow engineer and really enjoy working with people (yours truly). Okay, okay…maybe the first two figures are better and more well known examples, but my point is still valid. Find that thing you are really good at, fuse it with other interests or abilities, and voila—you have a unique set of skills that few others can offer. 🙌🏻

There are times in life where challenges come our way, some from external sources and others are self-inflicted. As I write this blog post, many people have recently been caught up in lay-offs, reduction in force (RIF), or the exiting of an industry or geography entirely. Walking into the holiday season without permanent work is a stressful prospect - resulting in frustration and sleepless nights. Those of us who are self-employed and trying to create some room for ourselves in the market may feel like we have either lost clients or gained competitors.

Well, back to the beginning of this blog and the fantastic advice! Throw yourself at something new! If you haven’t been thinking about your next move in life, take a week or two for reflection. After that pick your direction, mix in your past experience and knowledge, and go for it! For me, I am working through a really fantastic Strategic Talent Acquisition certificate from AIHR and learning about Sprint Recruiting (a Scrum concept) from Trent Cotton, whom I hadn’t heard of until this past week. Two months ago I never even considered a profession in the career/talent field and yet here I am with a company called My Default Career and utilizing all my spare time to earn accreditations in Human Resources!

Do I sleep well at night? Yes, I do! I am giving my all and my absolute best to this new path I find myself on and am enjoying every minute of it! If I can help you in any way I am pretty easy to find!

Have a great Sunday, don’t despair, give it all you have, and of course live your Default Life!
