The hourglass ran slow one afternoon as a good friend, Ivan, and myself were waiting for our sons to finish practice and having a pleasant, general, and yet deep discussion. Our conversation drifted to the topic of โ€˜conversationsโ€™ themselves and a recent political interview we had seen. There was someone who contemplatively and patiently listened, paused, and responded to questions while the other interrupted and backtracked on previously answered topics. My friend commented the whole scene was a microcosm of two types of behavior: the โ€˜doโ€™ part of yourself and the โ€˜actโ€™ part of yourself.

When you โ€˜doโ€™ things, much like our impatient interviewee, we merely react in the quickest way possible - often falling short or even wholly missing the actual need. When one โ€˜actsโ€™ they listen, wait, ponder, and once all seems right they โ€˜actโ€™ upon the request and very often hit the mark correctly the first time. Certainly, doing things has itโ€™s place, but for me, I have come to admire those who can act with a level of mature experience!

Albert Einstein is quoted as saying โ€œThe only source of knowledge is experience.โ€ Experience is one of the few things in life you canโ€™t cheat at, and reading is an activity that offers more experience than maybe itโ€™s given credit for. Reading is, by itโ€™s nature, an โ€˜actโ€™ behavior. While reading you have to read the words, wait for the end of the sentence, ponder itโ€™s independent and contextual meaning, and lastly interpret to the best of your ability. โ€œThose who practice are the ones who canโ€ - Jay.

Along with gaining experience in the practice of โ€˜actingโ€™ - reading also offers a deeper experience in vocabulary and the art of when and how to use words. Knowing by experience, the correct word or phase to accurately express yourself can save you from embarrassment, backtracking, and misunderstanding which can possibly lead to serious issues and regret later. For instance the subtle difference between growing vs. scaling or attending vs contributing will change with way others will plan and prepare.

Reading and increasing your vocabulary offers not only personal and professional growth but the opportunity to gain experience and maturity while practicing your ability to โ€˜actโ€™! On this Sunday grab a book or magazine, read, and learn something new. Donโ€™t forget to share what youโ€™ve learned with others!
