Right now Artificial Intelligence (AI) is all the rage. I’m not certain why and I often wonder if I’m the only one who has seen the movie The Terminator, 1984 (the best one, IMO).
Many years ago when IBM’s Watson started to appear on Jeopardy, everyone was so excited this machine with hundreds of scientists and millions of dollars invested behind it could answer questions. Around that time my daughter, now a 16 year old young woman, was about 14 months old and just loved to open the latched and hinged bin that held the cat’s food. Well I, mister adult dad, thought I would fool my little daughter by turning the latch toward the wall and thwarting her plans to make a mess. I watched as my daughter paused about half a millisecond (I’m an audio guy and can count in milliseconds), observed the situation, spun the bin around, opened the lid, and commenced with her mischievous deed of throwing cat food far and wide while tasting a few tidbits while she was at it. I stood there flabbergasted. To this day I am still amazed by the creative and inventive ways my kiddos have gotten in and out of trouble. Do they continue to outsmart me? You bet. Do I mind? Not one bit. Could my emails and blogs be more polished? Maybe, but I prefer the raw imperfections that come with an analog reality!
Children are amazing and they are the ones who have the true potential. So if you ever want to ask me what I think about AI…yeah, I’m not impressed. What do I think of my kids? I couldn’t be more proud!
